Marvell Joins SOAFEE and Autoware Foundation to Advance Software-Defined Vehicle Architectures

By Willard Tu, Associate VP, Product Marketing – Automotive Compute, Marvell

I’m excited to share that Marvell is now a member of two leading automotive technology organizations: the Scalable Open Architecture for Embedded Edge (SOAFEE) and the Autoware Foundation. Marvell’s participation in these organizations’ initiatives demonstrates its continued focus and investment in the automotive market. The new memberships follow the company’s 2021 announcement of its Brightlane™ automotive portfolio, and reflect Marvell’s expanding automotive silicon initiative.

SOAFEE, founded by Arm, is an industry-led collaboration defined by automakers, semiconductor suppliers, open source and independent software vendors, and cloud technology leaders. The collaboration intends to deliver a cloud-native architecture enhanced for mixed-criticality automotive applications with corresponding open-source reference implementations to enable commercial and non-commercial offerings.

As a member of SOAFEE, Marvell will access the SOAFEE architecture standards to help streamline development from cloud to deployment at the vehicle. This will enable faster time to market for the Marvell Brightlane automotive portfolio.

“Software is driving the industry to rethink and modernize its approach to automotive development, creating a massive opportunity for innovation in safety, sustainability and comfort,” said Robert Day, director of automotive partnerships, Automotive Line of Business, Arm. “Marvell is a leader in providing high performance Arm®-based processors, and we look forward to collaborating through SOAFEE on ways to help automotive developers more easily transition from cloud development to vehicle deployment.”

The Autoware Foundation is a non-profit organization created to initiate, grow, and fund open source collaborative engineering Autoware projects, with previous generations of Autoware.AI, Autoware.Auto (now Autoware Core and Universe) and outreaching the Autoware.IO initiative. Autoware also provides an ecosystem of companies, academia, and organizations focused on the advancement of Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS).

As a new member, Marvell will have access to the Autoware Foundation’s Open AD Kit, which is based on the SOAFEE architecture and reference implementation. By leveraging this reference framework and software, Marvell will highlight how its Brightlane automotive portfolio can support innovation in the advancement of mobility solutions.

“With the addition of Marvell to the Autoware Foundation, we look forward to compelling proof of concepts that leverage the foundation’s open-source workloads,” said Shinpei Kato, Chairman of the Board at Autoware Foundation. “We are excited to see Marvell showcase its Brightlane automotive portfolio for software-defined, autonomous vehicles.”

As companies make greater use of cloud development and digital twins to emulate the target vehicle environment, the SOAFEE open-standards-based architecture for software-defined vehicles will streamline “big loop” workflows from development to deployment, while delivering continuous improvements via over-the-air updates. Additionally, being part of the Autoware Foundation will give Marvell access to open-source autonomous driving software workloads that will allow us to create proofs-of-concept and leverage our high-performance compute SoC capabilities. Together, these memberships are yet another sign of our commitment to the automotive market.
